Doyin Odebowale, a former Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties to the late Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has criticized the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, over his call for the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, to revoke a chieftaincy title recently bestowed on an Ibadan businessman.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Odebowale argued that the Alaafin may have been misled into believing there was a jurisdictional conflict between his throne and that of the Ooni.

He maintained that traditional rulers only hold authority within their local government areas and are not constitutionally superior to elected officials at that level.

“With respect to most of these rulers today, there is a misunderstanding of roles. They want to be addressed as Kabiyesi, but in reality, they are not above local government chairmen in their respective domains. So, the idea of someone in Oyo dictating what happens in Ile-Ife is a misnomer. I believe the Alaafin must have been misled into thinking there was an existing issue with the Ooni’s office. I see no justification for such a distraction,” he stated.

Odebowale further linked recurring clashes among monarchs to what he described as “permissive decadence” within the system.

He noted that the colonial administration had reduced empires to stools by introducing chieftaincy laws that weakened monarchs’ authority.

“It is a pathetic reality that many who parade themselves as traditional rulers hardly understand their roles. They appear eager to abandon tradition. Many take delight in being addressed as Oba, assistant pastor, or Alhaji — which, in my view, is a complete abandonment of traditional values,” he added.
