Ajax Under F!re Over Tolu Arokodare’s Playing Time As Theo Janssen Raises Money Question

Former Netherlands international Theo Janssen has questioned whether Tolu Arokodare’s loan status at Ajax is affecting the Nigerian striker’s playing time, despite his impressive performances for the Dutch club.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Janssen raised the issue during an appearance on Ziggo Sport’s Rondo programme, suggesting that Ajax’s decision to sign Marcos Leonardo permanently could be influencing the coach’s selection decisions.

“It has to do with money that he does not always play,” Janssen said.

The former midfielder pointed to the difference between Arokodare’s loan arrangement and Leonardo’s permanent status at the club, questioning whether the circumstances surrounding their respective deals could be affecting the opportunities they receive.

“Tolu is on loan, and Leonardo was bought. Do you think the trainer decides this?” he asked.

Janssen also praised Arokodare’s qualities, arguing that the Nigerian forward had demonstrated enough ability to earn more regular playing time. He highlighted the striker’s physical strength, finishing skills and personality as qualities that make him a valuable option for the team.

“He is a nice guy when you hear him talk. He is strong and can score a goal. He is just a good player,” Janssen added.

Arokodare has recorded nine goals and three assists in 14 appearances across all competitions since joining Ajax, strengthening his case for a more prominent role in the squad. The 25-year-old recently scored the winning goal in Ajax’s 2-1 victory over Sparta Rotterdam on October 25.

He also reached the milestone of 100 career goals during Ajax’s match against Atalanta on October 22, further highlighting his contribution in front of goal.

Ajax secured Arokodare’s services on a season-long loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers on July 29 after the striker struggled to establish himself during his first season at Molineux.

Reports indicate that the Dutch club are covering his full wages and paying a loan fee, with additional payments reportedly linked to qualification for European competitions. The agreement is also said to include an option to make the transfer permanent for approximately €22 million.

Arokodare is reportedly willing to remain at Ajax beyond the current campaign, provided the club improves his salary terms. Ajax are also understood to be interested in retaining the Nigerian striker permanently.

Janssen’s comments have brought renewed attention to Arokodare’s role at the club, with questions emerging over whether his loan status could be influencing selection decisions despite his goal-scoring form.
