Funke Akindele Breaks Silence On Private Struggles: I Lock Myself in My Room To Cry

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened up about her private emotional struggles, revealing that she sometimes locks herself in her room to cry when life becomes overwhelming.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the award-winning actress made the disclosure during an interview with CNN journalist Larry Madowo, where she discussed the pressures of being a public figure and the emotional challenges she faces despite her successful career in the entertainment industry.

Akindele, who is widely recognised for entertaining audiences through her movies, explained that she sometimes experiences moments of emotional breakdown when faced with difficult situations. She said crying allows her to express her feelings before gathering the strength to move forward.

The actress also spoke about the pressure associated with public discussions of her personal life, particularly her marriages and breakups. She admitted that such scrutiny sometimes makes her question her decisions and worry about how people perceive her.

“I cry. I lock myself in the room, cry, break down, hit the bed. But I just pick up myself and come back to life. Sometimes I tell myself, ah, you’ve made a mistake again. How are people going to judge you?” she said.

Despite these moments of uncertainty, Akindele explained that she has learnt to confront her challenges rather than allow public opinion to dictate her life. She encouraged herself to remain strong, face difficult situations and continue moving forward.

The filmmaker further emphasised the importance of self-care, self-love and maintaining a healthy balance between professional responsibilities and personal relationships.

According to her, success should not be measured solely by professional achievements, as taking care of oneself and making time for loved ones are equally important.

“I’ve noticed over the years that it’s not all about the work. You need to take care of yourself. You need to love yourself. You need to have time for your family, your loved ones, because as the work would go, the family would be there,” Akindele stated.

Her remarks offer a glimpse into the personal challenges that can accompany fame, highlighting the importance of emotional well-being and family support even for people who appear successful and confident in the public eye.
