Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for the immediate execution of the Stephen Oronsaye report, aimed at curbing the cost of governance. The report recommends the elimination of certain government agencies to streamline expenses, as noted during a discussion on governance expenses organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in Abuja. Akpabio highlighted the significant overhead costs of appointive public officials and the salaries and allowances of elected officials as major contributors to the high governance expenses. Stressing the urgency of action, Akpabio underscored the necessity to implement the Oronsaye report’s recommendations promptly, a move recently endorsed by the federal government.
Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe echoed Akpabio’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of transparent and accountable governance through bureaucratic streamlining and expense reduction. Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas advocated for government spending alignment with the prevailing economic conditions, citing Nigeria’s persistent budget deficits as a pressing concern necessitating operational cost optimization and budgetary stability efforts.
In a related development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu formed an 11-member committee to oversee the implementation of the Oronsaye report’s recommendations. The Federal Government has assured that the report’s implementation will not lead to the dismissal of Nigerian workers. Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris clarified that rather than job losses, the report’s implementation aims for cost savings, enhanced government expense management, and Civil Service efficiency improvement. Through this initiative, President Tinubu aims to eliminate redundant functions, streamline administrative processes, and optimize resource allocation.
