The statement highlighted that the portrayal of Akpabio as frequently arriving late to plenary sessions contradicts his commitment to punctuality, citing his adherence to Benjamin Franklin’s philosophy that “Time is money.” Akpabio, being an intellectual politician and leader, believes in the essence of time and has demonstrated exemplary time management skills throughout his private and public life.
Additionally, the statement emphasized Akpabio’s deep respect for his colleagues and the understanding that, as Senate President, he is one among equals. It stressed that there is no motive to undermine the status of distinguished senators by causing delays in plenary sessions.
The statement clarified that as Chairman of the National Assembly, Akpabio and his colleagues are well-versed in legislative dynamics and are aware of the significant responsibilities associated with the office of the Senate President. It explained that disruptions or lateness to scheduled events are prioritized, not compromised, and that emergency issues requiring urgent attention may lead to delays in the commencement of plenary sessions.
The statement also highlighted the procedural aspects of addressing urgent matters before plenary, with senators required to meet with the Presiding Officer, in this case, Akpabio, to discuss motions of urgent public/national importance. These discussions, along with unforeseen circumstances, may contribute to occasional delays in starting plenary sessions.
The statement concluded by asserting that Akpabio’s occasional lateness to plenary has never adversely affected the efficiency of the Senate or intended to undermine the core parliamentary mandate of the Senate President. It dismissed insinuations that Akpabio’s alleged habit of being late dates back to his tenure as Akwa Ibom State governor, describing such claims as baseless.
The public was urged to disregard the narrative of Akpabio being habitually late, with a final call for those spreading such information to allow the Senate President to focus on serving the nation and humanity without unnecessary distractions.
