The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has said that several of President Bola Tinubu’s reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidy, are long-overdue policies that Nigeria should have adopted nearly four decades ago.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Akume made the remark on Sunday during a special service at the National Ecumenical Centre in Abuja to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day celebration.

The former Benue State governor reaffirmed Tinubu’s determination to reposition the country, stressing that Nigeria’s current challenges predate the present administration.

He noted that the President has embarked on bold reforms aimed at addressing systemic issues, but insisted that every citizen must contribute to building a better nation.

“Each Nigerian has a role in building the Nigeria we deserve. The President needs the support of all. What President Bola Tinubu is doing today could have been done 39 years ago. But I believe that at the end of the tunnel, there is light,” Akume said.

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) faulted the administration for pushing to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council while failing to curb worsening insecurity at home.

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, described the move as misplaced, arguing that Nigeria cannot demand greater international responsibility when it struggles to protect its own citizens.

The ADC also criticised President Tinubu for being absent at the passing-out parade and commissioning of 874 Nigerian Army officers at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna on Saturday. Instead, they noted, the President chose to attend the commissioning of the renovated National Arts Theatre in Lagos—just as he did in 2024.
