Amid Hardship: Nigerians Convert Private Cars Into Commercial Vehicles. In the wake of fuel subsidy removal and the recent spike in the price of  petrol, which has significantly exacerbated hardship across the country, more private car owners in Nigeria are converting their vehicles into commercial services to help offset the rising fuel costs.

Reports indicate that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has raised the petrol price from N897 to N1,030 per litre, further deteriorating Nigeria’s already precarious economic landscape.

Experts caution that this increase will push even more citizens into poverty, compounding the existing cost-of-living crisis.

Fuel prices have surged nationally, with an average increase of 174.6 percent due to these recent developments. This has put additional pressure on consumers, as the removal of fuel subsidies and currency devaluation have led to further increases in the prices of goods and services.

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the effects of escalating inflation are being felt severely by Nigerians, with the inflation rate hitting 22.41 percent in May, far outpacing wage growth. Fuel and transportation are significant contributors to this inflation rise.

The report notes that food and non-alcoholic beverages are the largest contributors to rising inflation (11.61 percent), followed by housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels (3.75 percent), clothing and footwear (1.71 percent), and transportation (1.46 percent).

As inflation skyrockets to 33.95 percent, food prices have surged, resulting in widespread hardship for families relying on fixed incomes. Many are struggling to afford basic necessities, with reports of rice prices exceeding N100,000 per bag.

Nigerians and economists are calling on the government to take decisive action to alleviate the financial burden on households, especially as consumers express growing concerns over soaring prices for eggs and various meats, particularly livestock.

Amid this crisis, some private car owners have turned to commercial driving to help recoup daily fuel expenses, picking up passengers along their routes. They assert that this strategy helps mitigate the financial strain caused by rising fuel prices.

Consequently, many private car owners have adopted part-time cab driving roles as a means to cope with the economic challenges stemming from the recent petrol price hikes.
