Makinde dismissed these speculations as baseless and stated that he will address his political future on his own terms when the time is right. Speaking at an event at Fashola Farm in Oyo, he highlighted his independence and commitment to his political agenda.
“We didn’t host this PDP reporters’ retreat because someone has a presidential ambition. I won’t comment on that, but I want to make it clear: I’m old enough to declare my intentions when I choose to. No one can dictate my agenda. I will present it when the time comes,” he said, countering the ongoing speculation about his ambitions.
Reflecting on his political journey, marked by challenges and triumphs, Makinde emphasized that his election as governor stemmed solely from the will of the people. He pointed out that despite facing setbacks, including two failed Senate bids, he won the governorship without the support of any political godfathers or major sponsors.
“Oyo State made a decision in 2019. I had no godfather, no financial backing. It was the people of Oyo who decided to give an outsider a chance. Before my election, I faced skepticism—people questioned my lack of political experience. I had never served as a councillor, nor was I in the House of Representatives or the Senate, where I tried and failed twice.
“While I lacked experience in politics, I had succeeded in business, and the people chose to trust me. They embraced my vision, outlined in the ‘Road Map to Accelerated Development of Oyo State, 2019-2023,’ and asked me to be accountable. Thankfully, we are delivering on that promise.”
The governor also expressed concerns about the risk of Nigeria becoming a one-party state, stressing the importance of a multi-party system to ensure diverse leadership and opportunities for individuals from various backgrounds. “Nigeria must not slide into a one-party state. A competitive political environment is essential for showcasing talents,” Makinde stated, reaffirming his commitment to fostering political diversity.
