This tragic event took place in the early hours of Saturday.
Eyewitnesses report that the violence erupted when the officer led a police team to the scene of an accident at the WEMCO junction on Mobil Road, Agege, amidst rising tensions.
During the ensuing chaos, the police team was ambushed by Okada riders who were dissatisfied with the officers’ handling of the situation. Reports indicate that the ASP became a specific target, while other officers fled the scene during the unexpected assault.
In the wake of the alleged murder, police have arrested at least five suspects, with ongoing efforts to track down additional individuals involved.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the incident, describing it as “needless and uncalled for.”
Hundeyin explained, “The police received a distress call around 1:40 a.m. on Saturday about a fatal accident involving an Okada rider and a trailer at WEMCO junction on Mobil Road near Pen Cinema, Agege. The police responded swiftly.”
He disclosed that initial investigations revealed that an Okada rider had collided with the trailer, resulting in his death.
When police arrived, they encountered a large gathering of motorcycle riders at the scene. As the patrol team worked to clear the wreckage, they were attacked by the riders, who attempted to set the truck ablaze. In the chaos, a 46-year-old ASP sustained a head injury and died on the spot, while the truck driver managed to escape.
“Five suspects have been apprehended, and we are intensifying the search for others,” Hundeyin stated.
