APC Cries Out Over Alleged Impersonation as Ogun 2027 Governorship Race Heats Up

The national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, seeking the immediate investigation, arrest and prosecution of Abayomi Hunye over allegations that he has been parading himself as the party’s governorship candidate for the January 2027 Ogun State election.

The petition, dated August 24, 2026, and submitted at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, followed the party’s earlier public declaration distancing itself from Hunye and affirming Senator Adeola Solomon Olamilekan, popularly known as Yayi, alongside his running mate, Balogun Kudirat Abiodun, as its recognised candidates for the election.

The complaint, signed by Ayoola Peter Olajolo, Director of Administration at the APC National Headquarters, accused Hunye of alleged impersonation, conduct capable of causing a breach of public peace and violations of provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

According to the APC, Hunye had allegedly used print and social media platforms to present himself to the public as the party’s governorship candidate despite the party’s position that he was not its flagbearer.

The party described the alleged action as a deliberate attempt to mislead members of the public and create tension ahead of the 2027 election in Ogun State.

The petition also detailed Hunye’s standing within the APC, stating that he was suspended from the party on April 7, 2026, following a petition initiated by his ward in Tube Ward, Ipokia Local Government Area. The suspension was subsequently ratified by the Ogun State Working Committee and communicated to the national leadership of the party.

Documents reportedly attached to the petition, including copies of the suspension letter and ratification notices, accused Hunye of alleged anti-party activities and actions considered harmful to the image and interests of the APC.

The party further maintained that it had conducted its governorship primary and officially submitted its candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). It said acknowledgement documents from the electoral body identified Senator Adeola Solomon Olamilekan as the governorship candidate and Balogun Kudirat Abiodun as the deputy governorship candidate.

In its appeal to the police authorities, the APC urged the IGP to invite Hunye for questioning and investigate the allegations against him. The party also requested that he be prosecuted if found culpable and restrained from further presenting himself as its governorship candidate.

The APC said its national and Ogun State structures would cooperate fully with the police investigation and make relevant documents, witness statements and other supporting evidence available to the authorities.

The development adds another layer of tension to the political contest ahead of the 2027 Ogun governorship election, with the APC seeking to assert its official candidate and prevent what it described as confusion over its ticket.
