President Bola Tinubu on Monday described the mass defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and key PDP structures to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as an unprecedented political earthquake in Nigeria’s history.
In stark contrast, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai played down the significance of such defections, calling them highly overrated and devoid of real electoral weight.
Tinubu’s remarks came during the formal defection ceremony held at the Cenotaph in Asaba, where Oborevwori, Okowa, and other notable PDP figures officially joined the APC, marking the end of PDP’s nearly 26-year political dominance in Delta State.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Tinubu, was present at the event, alongside APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje and a host of governors including Hope Uzodinma (Imo), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Monday Okphebholo (Edo), Ahmed Ododo (Kogi), Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Dikko Radda (Katsina), and Mohammed Yahaya (Gombe).
Also in attendance were top party stalwarts such as former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, and Senators Ned Nwoko, Joel Onowakpo-Thomas, and Ede Dafinone.
Speaking to a cheering crowd, Tinubu declared: “What we’re witnessing today is a political tsunami of historic magnitude — something never seen before in the South-South or in our nation’s political annals.”
