Olayinka explained that the PDP’s troubles began when Atiku, then Vice President, sabotaged the party’s efforts to secure Lagos State. He further claimed that Atiku’s actions almost led to the downfall of President Olusegun Obasanjo, forcing him to beg for a second-term ticket.
During an interview on Arise News, Olayinka detailed how the issues in the PDP remained less visible because the party managed to patch things up and maintain power. However, he emphasized that the real problems started much earlier.
“The problem didn’t start with the 2023 election,” Olayinka said. “It began in 2003 when Atiku, as Vice President, frustrated efforts to win Lagos State. The issues grew to the point where Obasanjo had to beg his own running mate for a second-term ticket. By 2007, Atiku went on to form the Action Congress, even while still Vice President under a PDP government, and contested the presidential election against his own party’s mandate.”
Olayinka also accused Atiku of leading a rebellion in 2014, which resulted in the loss of the presidential race by Goodluck Jonathan and ultimately led to the PDP’s loss of power in 2015.
He recalled how Atiku, after joining the All Progressives Congress (APC), used his resources to ensure the party’s victory at the expense of the PDP. “Atiku led a rebellion that took PDP out of power in 2015,” Olayinka stated. “Had Atiku not led that rebellion, the PDP would still be in power today.”
Olayinka also pointed out that while figures like Nyesom Wike and Ayo Fayose stayed within the PDP to rebuild the party after the 2015 defeat, Atiku retreated to Dubai, only to return in 2018 to contest the party’s ticket and lose the election.
He criticized Atiku for repeatedly fleeing to Dubai after each electoral defeat, rather than staying in the country to lead the opposition. “After losing, Atiku goes to Dubai for over two years. It wasn’t until two years later that he returned to express gratitude to those who worked with him,” Olayinka said.
Finally, Olayinka dismissed media mogul Dele Momodu’s views on the PDP crisis, accusing him of not knowing the party’s history and making incorrect public statements about the situation.
