Attah Ameh Oboni, a respected Igala king, was once asked at a meeting with all of Nigeria’s paramount traditional rulers – a meeting attended by the Queen of England – to remove his cap as a sign of respect. The situation escalated when Attah Ameh, in his stubborn refusal to compromise his customs, removed his cap and a swarm of bees erupted from within, causing pandemonium in the meeting hall. The Queen of England, alongside other rulers, fled the hall, apart from the Oba of Benin who had been pre-warned by Attah Ameh. Many were stung by the bees, effectively ending the meeting.

This extraordinary incident made the Queen and the northern leaders irate. They felt Attah Ameh, who had become increasingly uncontrollable, needed to be removed from his throne.

The Igala people have various cultural festivals, one of which is the Ocho festival. During this festival, Attah Ameh would pray for rain, successful hunting, and bountiful harvest. One particular year, the blood of an animal used for a sacrifice at the Ocho festival became the catalyst for Attah Ameh’s downfall. The accusation was enough for the decision to be made – Attah Ameh was to be dethroned, even before the investigation was concluded. In a sad twist of fate, Attah Ameh had died before the verdict was announced. However, he was certain that he had been wrongly accused and framed by his own people.

Before his death, he made a couple of prophetic statements. He stated that the hand of the person who wrote the petition against him would dry up, and the leader of the petitioners would be buried three times. Both of these prophesies came to pass. He also said that because his own people, the Igala, were the genesis of his ordeal, there would be disunity among them until the reign of his own blood.

The esteemed king committed suicide in Dekina before he was dethroned. He was quoted to have prophesied that the town of Dekina would be famous, but its development would not match its popularity. All these came to pass, cementing the legacy of Attah Ameh Oboni as a ruler who remained steadfast to his traditions, even in the face of opposition.
