Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, asserts that government should refrain from subsidizing religious pilgrimages.
Various civil society groups have urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in Nigeria’s 2024 Hajj preparations by subsidizing pilgrim fares following the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria’s announcement of an increase in the 2024 Hajj fare.
In response, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approved a subsidy of N500,000 for each of the 2,096 intending Muslim pilgrims from the state for the 2024 Hajj.
El-Rufai contends that subsidizing religious pilgrimages should not be a government priority, particularly given the current economic challenges in the country. He expressed this sentiment on his X handle: “Governments should have no business subsidizing religious pilgrimages, especially not in this current economic climate.
