Basketmouth Fires Shots At Nigerians Flaunting Wealth On Social Media: Who Are You Impressing?

Nigerian comedian Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has criticised the growing trend of flaunting wealth on social media, questioning the motivation behind people displaying their luxury cars and mansions online.

The comedian shared his views in a post on his Instagram Story on Monday, October 26, asking whether individuals who showcase their expensive possessions are seeking admiration from wealthy people or those who may not have the means to acquire similar luxuries.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Basketmouth challenged social media users to reflect on the purpose of publicly displaying their wealth, suggesting that those who are already rich may not be impressed, while others may only be able to admire such possessions from a distance.

“When you post your fleet of cars and your mansions on social media, who exactly are you trying to impress? The rich, who probably have way better? Or the poor, who can only admire from a distance… if they have data,” he wrote.

The comedian also questioned the wisdom of spending billions of naira on high-end sports cars and other luxury vehicles when road conditions in Lagos make it difficult to drive them comfortably.

“You spend billions on supercars you can barely drive in Lagos. Is your garage a race track?” he asked.

Basketmouth further drew attention to the worsening condition of some roads in the city, highlighting the growing potholes and flooding that continue to affect motorists.

“Meanwhile, the potholes are getting bigger and the floods are getting deeper,” he added.

Concluding his remarks, the comedian suggested that genuine wealth does not require public validation, stressing that people do not necessarily need to advertise their financial status to others.

“True wealth doesn’t need an audience…it moves in silence,” he stated.

His comments have added to ongoing conversations about social media culture, conspicuous consumption and the pressure some people feel to demonstrate their financial success online.
