The Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended Adamu Ahmed Suleiman for disseminating an old video that falsely accused police officers of engaging in armed robbery.
The video, which features a police van, includes an audio recording where a male voice alleges that the officers were involved in robbing and harassing local residents and travelers in Bauchi State.
During a press briefing at the police headquarters on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, the command’s spokesperson, SP Ahmed Muhammed Wakil, provided details on behalf of the State Police Commissioner, CP Auwal Musa Mohammed.
According to SP Wakil, Suleiman’s actions of posting defamatory and misleading content aimed at spreading false information were intended to provoke a disruption of public peace and safety in Bauchi State.
Wakil clarified that the incident in the video took place on February 18, 2020, along the Kano-Maiduguri road near Bam village in the Dambam Local Government Area. On that date, the police officers shown in the video were responding to a distress call about an ongoing armed robbery.
“The Command wishes to address the recent circulation of an old video clip that shows a police vehicle at the scene of an armed robbery,” Wakil stated.
“The incident occurred on February 18, 2020, along the Kano-Maiduguri road near Bam village in Dambam LGA. The video includes a voice alleging that the police officers involved were the perpetrators of the robbery.
“We want to make it clear that this video is outdated and does not reflect the current actions of the Bauchi State Police Command officers.
“Contrary to the false narrative in the video, the officers were responding to a distress call and had left their vehicle to pursue the robbers into the nearby bush.
“As a warning, the Command takes the spread of such misinformation very seriously, especially when it has the potential to incite fear, confusion, or unrest among the public. The Command will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute those who disseminate false or misleading content intended to damage the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force.”
In line with this stance, the Command has arrested Adamu Ahmed Suleiman of Anguwan Sarakuna, Bauchi, for his role in spreading the false video across social media platforms.
“Suleiman’s deliberate attempt to mislead and incite the public against the Nigeria Police Force, by posting offensive and defamatory content, constitutes an act to provoke a breakdown of public peace and safety in Bauchi State. His actions are criminalized under section 27 of the Cybercrimes Act 2024 and section 24(1)(b)&(2)(a)&(C) of the Cybercrimes Act 2024, which penalizes the transmission of grossly offensive and false communication via social media,” Wakil explained.
The Command urges citizens to exercise caution in sharing information and to avoid actions that could disrupt public order or endanger the safety of others.
“Finally, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police CP Auwal Musa Mohammed, the Command remains committed to protecting the lives and property of all citizens and will continue to uphold the law impartially,” Wakil concluded.
