In the serene southern Ijaw Ogboinbiri community in Bayelsa, a 90-year-old woman named Podoge Egbe faces a prolonged battle for justice, seeking the intervention of President Tinubu. Her ordeal dates back to 2005 when a devastating oil spill, caused by the negligence of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NOAC), infringed upon her fishing rights and damaged her properties.

The heart-wrenching incident unfolded during a 9-pipeline oil spillage tragedy, a result of NOAC’s incompetence during their operations in the elderly lady’s residing area. An eyewitness, speaking to reporters from Bushradiogist, recounted that in 2005, the then Chairman of the Community Development Committee pleaded with NOAC operatives, who were operating on the elderly lady’s land. Podoge Egbe, a landlord to the Agip gas plant in Ogboinbiri, suffered the consequences of this environmental tragedy.

In 2009, Podoge Egbe filed a lawsuit in the Federal High Court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa’s capital. Ten years later, in 2019, she filed an amended statement against NOAC, and fortunately, justice was served. The Federal High Court, presided over by Judge A.O Awogboro, ruled in favor of Podoge Egbe on Thursday, 22nd July 2021. NOAC was directed to pay a significant sum of thirty million as damages for the injustices inflicted on her.

However, despite the court’s clear directive, NOAC has yet to fulfill its obligation to the elderly woman. The lingering question remains: why has NOAC refused to compensate her for the damages caused more than eighteen years ago?

This is a plea for President Bola Tinubu to intervene in this protracted issue before NOAC transitions its operations to Oando, as they have already sold their onshore operations in Bayelsa State. Urgent action is needed to prevent escalating protests by the aggrieved people of Ijaw.
