During a meeting on Thursday, the Opu-Nembe community labeled the claims made by the hotel owner, Darius Obiene-Dede, as “misleading” and “cheap blackmail.” Obiene had demanded N625 million from the Inspector General for the use of his hotel to accommodate members of the SWAT team deployed for peacekeeping operations in the area.

The community clarified that they had requested the SWAT team’s deployment in response to rising insecurity in Opu-Nembe, emphasizing the need for professional intervention from neutral police personnel.

Yousuo Iruo, Chairman of the Opu-Nembe Council of Chiefs, stated, “It was the community that allocated Euphemie Hotel for the use of the police team. The IGP was not involved in the decision-making process.”

Residents also highlighted that prior to the police team’s arrival, the hotel was in a state of disrepair, describing it as an abandoned facility infested with snakes and other reptiles. They criticized Obiene’s demand for N625 million—equivalent to N50,000 per night for 50 rooms over 13 months—as laughable and a disappointing display of dishonesty.
