A middle-aged Benue man, Prince Matthew Chile, has been liberated after enduring nearly a week in captivity at the hands of suspected armed Fulani herdsmen.

Chile, a native of Sengev in Gwer-West LGA, was abducted on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, while traveling with three others along the Makurdi-Naka road around 6 pm. Fortunately, all four individuals were released, bringing relief to their families and community.The news of Chile’s release was shared by a fellow birthday celebrant and former House of Representatives candidate, Hon Victor Torsar Ormin, who expressed joy at his friend’s safe return, especially on the day of their shared birthday. Despite the celebratory mood, questions remain regarding whether a ransom was paid, as the abductors initially demanded ₦100 million, later reducing it to ₦50 million.The Makurdi-Naka route has unfortunately become a dangerous passage plagued by frequent attacks, killings, and kidnappings by suspected Fulani herdsmen since 2023. This has put commercial vehicles, particularly Benue Links, at risk, with many non-Benue residents falling victim to these crimes, some even losing their lives.Riverine communities in Gwer-West LGA have emerged as epicenters of violence, serving as launching pads for attacks on neighboring areas.

The situation has displaced countless residents, leaving these areas under the control of attackers.Despite this ordeal, Prince Matthew Chile’s safe return offers a glimmer of hope amid the ongoing security challenges facing Benue State.
