Estimated Losses from Weekly Sit-at-Home Protests in Southeast Nigeria:
The southeast region of Nigeria has reportedly lost an estimated N7.6 trillion in productivity, potential investments, and the loss of lives and properties over the past two years due to the weekly sit-at-home exercises practiced on Mondays.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) initiated these protests to protest the release of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, in 2021. Since then, the sit-at-home exercise has been observed almost every Monday in the region.
In the span of two years, a total of 105 Mondays out of 520 working days have been lost in terms of productivity and economic activity. Additionally, various holidays declared during the remaining 415 days further impact economic activity.
An investigation by the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) revealed that businesses in the region suffered a massive loss of N5.375 trillion between August 9, 2021, and December 19, 2022, solely due to the sit-at-home protests.
