George made the statement on Monday while speaking on Politics Today, a programme broadcast on Channels Television.
With the country gearing up for the 2027 general elections, expectations for transparency and credibility are high. The elder statesman urged the new INEC chairman to ensure that the errors witnessed during the 2023 elections are not repeated.
“Remember the last election, when Buhari bought the necessary tools. What did we do? They claimed there was a glitch,” George recalled.
He warned against deliberate errors that compromised the integrity of the previous elections, insisting that INEC must implement measures to prevent any system failures.
“Mr. Amupitan, there should be no glitch in this system,” George added.
Meanwhile, barely a month ago, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) urged INEC Chairman Amupitan to account for the missing or diverted ₦55.9 billion intended for the purchase of smart card readers, ballot papers, result sheets, and other election materials for the 2019 general elections.
The allegations were documented in the Auditor-General’s latest annual report, published on 9 September 2025. SERAP also called on INEC to disclose the contractors involved, including the names of their directors, shareholders, and addresses.
In a letter dated 6 December 2025, signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation urged Amupitan to refer these alleged violations to appropriate anti-corruption agencies for prosecution and ensure the full recovery of misappropriated funds.
SERAP emphasised that any corruption in the procurement of election materials undermines Nigerians’ right to participate in free, fair, transparent, and credible elections, warning that INEC must operate without corruption to safeguard democratic processes.
