“We have learned of the heartbreaking passing of our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei following a brutal attack by her boyfriend,” Rukare said in a statement on X. “This was a senseless act of violence that has resulted in the loss of a remarkable athlete. Her legacy will endure.”

The attack occurred on Sunday at Cheptegei’s residence in Endebess, Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya. Local authorities reported that her partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, allegedly poured petrol on her and set her alight.

Cheptegei, 33, had recently competed in the marathon at the Paris Olympics, finishing 44th. Following the assault, she sustained burns over 80% of her body and was admitted to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Kenya. Despite medical efforts, her condition deteriorated, leading to multiple organ failure and her death on Thursday. A medical officer at the hospital confirmed, “All her organs failed last night,” marking the tragic end of her struggle for survival.

The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over Cheptegei’s death and condemning the violence that led to her demise. “We are profoundly saddened by the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, who was a victim of domestic violence,” the statement read. “We condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest in peace.”
