ABUJA – The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), comprising thirty-six state governors, has rejected the proposed N60,000 minimum wage, deeming it unsustainable and unfeasible.
The governors argue that implementing such a wage would force many states to use all their Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations solely for salary payments, leaving no funds for development projects.
In a statement released by the NGF’s acting Director of Media and Public Affairs, Hajiya Halimah Salihu Ahmed, titled “NGF’s Stand on the Unsustainability of N60,000 Minimum Wage,” the forum emphasized the need for a new minimum wage while expressing sympathy with labor unions’ demands for higher wages.
However, they caution that any agreement reached must be realistic and sustainable, considering the broader socioeconomic implications and the need for fairness to all segments of society.
This stance comes amidst ongoing negotiations between the federal government and organized labor, with the latter temporarily suspending a strike to allow for further discussions.
While the federal government has expressed a commitment to increasing the minimum wage beyond N60,000, both sides continue to deliberate on a mutually agreeable solution.
