Emefiele appeared before Justice Yusuf Halilu to face an eight-count charge that includes criminal breach of trust, forgery, and ownership of properties suspected to be proceeds of crime.
According to the EFCC, Emefiele and his alleged accomplice, Eric Ocheme—who is currently on the run—had control of properties situated at Plot 109, Cadastral Zone C09, Lokogoma District, Abuja, believed to have been unlawfully acquired.
The anti-graft agency further alleged that the accused maintained multiple proxy accounts with Zenith Bank containing billions of naira suspected to be embezzled public funds during Emefiele’s tenure as CBN governor.
One of the charges claims that Emefiele forged an “Irrevocable Power of Attorney Between MG Properties Limited and H and Y Business Global Limited” in January 2021, intending to deceive authorities into believing the document was legitimate.
The EFCC stated that the alleged crimes violated Sections 319, 362, and 364 of the Penal Code.
Emefiele pleaded not guilty to all charges.
After his plea, prosecuting counsel Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) requested a trial date and assured the court that the prosecution would present witnesses to prove its case.
Emefiele’s lead counsel, Matthew Burkaa (SAN), filed for bail, which the prosecution did not oppose.
Justice Halilu granted bail in the sum of ₦2 billion, requiring two sureties residing in Abuja who must own property in either Maitama, Asokoro, or Wuse 2. The judge added that Emefiele would be remanded in custody if he failed to meet the bail conditions by Wednesday.
