The heartbreaking incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. on Sunday at the bank’s premises located along Zik Avenue near Okeke Street.

According to an internal police report obtained by SaharaReporters, Inspector Amechi was on night duty when his eldest son mistakenly discharged a bullet from the officer’s AK-47 rifle. The shot fatally struck Amechi in the spine from behind.

The bullet also injured his six-year-old son, Emmanuel Vincent, who sustained gunshot wounds to his back and right hand.

Both were immediately taken to Amaku Specialist Teaching Hospital in Awka. Sadly, Inspector Amechi was declared dead on arrival, while Emmanuel is receiving medical care and responding to treatment.

The report revealed that the rifle—an AK-47 with Breach No. BA360691—had been negligently cocked and left without its safety catch engaged. The weapon was loaded with 30 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm ammunition.

At the time of the incident, Inspector Amechi was being visited by his three sons: Dominion (10), Wisdom (8), and Emmanuel (6). Dominion, unaware of the dangers, was reportedly playing with the loaded rifle when the fatal discharge occurred.
