Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State is facing a mounting crisis as two more commissioners, Emeka Woke and Austen Ben-Chioma, have recently resigned, bringing the total number of cabinet resignations to nine. Emeka Woke, the former Commissioner for Special Projects, and Austen Ben-Chioma, who held the portfolio for Environment, joined seven others who had already stepped down.

Emeka Woke, who previously served as the Chief of Staff to former governor Nyesom Wike, submitted his resignation letter on November 14, 2023, citing pressing family demands and a desire to create opportunities for other deserving individuals to serve the state. Austen Ben-Chioma, the former Commissioner for Urban Development in the previous administration, followed suit with a resignation letter dated December 15, 2023, citing personal reasons for his departure.
The cascade of resignations began with the State’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Zacchaeus Adangor, whose resignation was the first to be reported. Other commissioners who had earlier resigned include George-Kelly Alabo (Commissioner for Works), Inime Aguma (Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Commissioner), Isaac Kamalu (Commissioner of Finance), Dr. Jacobson B. Nbina (Commissioner of Transportation), Prof. Prince Chinedu (State Commissioner for Education), and Gift Worlu (State Commissioner for Housing).
The public disclosure of these resignations coincided with the escalating political crisis in Rivers State. Additionally, Henry Ogiri, the Commissioner in charge of the Ministry of Power, had left in November to assume a federal appointment as a Commissioner in the National Population Commission.
With the departure of these nine commissioners, Governor Fubara’s cabinet is now left with approximately eight commissioners, assuming that no additional resignations have occurred since. The crisis deepens as the government faces the challenge of filling key positions and maintaining stability in the state.
