According to Adebanjo, the key to resolving economic hardships, protests, insecurity issues, and the devaluation of the national currency lies in reverting to a federalist constitution. In an interview with TheCable on Saturday, he advocated for a complete overhaul of the current constitution, calling for the creation of a new one.

Adebanjo argued, “The issue of insecurity and a bad economy are products of the fraudulent constitution that we are using. There can be no progress until that constitution is thoroughly changed. A surgical operation must be done on that constitution.”

He expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of amending a constitution that is already broken-down, stating, “Until they bring down this constitution and we have a new beginning, we can’t make any headway. You are just patching things up, amending a constitution that you didn’t make.”

Adebanjo criticized the ongoing discussions around state police and resource control, asserting that these efforts are futile within the current constitutional framework. He called for the restoration of autonomy to federating states, advocating a return to the 1963 constitution as the only viable solution.

His remarks coincide with the National Assembly’s plan to amend the 1999 constitution in response to various concerns in the country. The constitution review committee, set to be inaugurated on February 26, has received 40 amendment bills thus far. Despite these legislative efforts, Adebanjo remains steadfast in his belief that only a comprehensive restructuring can pave the way for meaningful progress.
