During this announcement, gunfire was heard by AFP journalists in the Gabonese capital, Libreville, intensifying the atmosphere of tension and uncertainty.

Representing the “Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions”, one soldier asserted, “We have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the current regime”, during the broadcast on Gabon 24 TV channel. He further declared the dissolution of “all the institutions of the republic”, including the government, Senate, National Assembly, and the Constitutional Court. Additionally, the country’s borders have been closed “until further notice”.

This group consisted of members from the Republican Guard, the regular army, and police officers, highlighting a considerable representation from various security and defense forces.

His primary opponent, Albert Ondo Ossa, managed to obtain only 30.77 percent of the vote, as per the released results. Ondo Ossa’s camp had previously criticized the election process, accusing it of being tainted by “fraud orchestrated by the Bongo camp”. On the eve of the election, Bongo’s administration had imposed both a curfew and an extensive internet shutdown, citing reasons of preventing potential violence and the spread of “false news”.
