The lawmakers, reportedly aligned with Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, disclosed their decision amidst an atmosphere of political tension. The legislative body had been grappling with internal strife, notably in their attempt to impeach Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara.

The faction, loyal to Speaker Amaehwule, accused Governor Fubara of withholding funds earmarked for the Assembly’s management, aggravating the already strained relations within the state government. This grievance was expressed during the 87th plenary in Port Harcourt on Monday.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the purported fiscal neglect, the group, comprising 27 legislators out of the 32-member House, formally announced their defection to the APC. Citing division within the PDP as the primary catalyst for their move, the lawmakers presented signed letters justifying their political shift.

Speaker Amaehwule instructed the House clerk to convey their resolution to Governor Fubara and other relevant authorities. He asserted that the decision to defect was driven by the collective desire to better serve the state’s interests.

Amidst the political developments, the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2023 successfully passed the second reading during the plenary, indicating continued legislative activity amidst the changing political landscape.
