The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petition has advised the legal representatives of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, to pursue contempt proceedings against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS) if they possess substantial evidence of Emefiele’s alleged abduction at the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Kuje, Abuja. The committee provided this counsel after a hearing on the petition filed by the Centre for Social Justice Equity and Transparency (CESJT) regarding the failed attempt by the anti-graft agency to abduct Emefiele from Kuje prisons, Abuja, following the court’s grant of bail.

During the hearing, the Correctional Center representatives denied the allegation of a failed abduction, while the petitioners presented photographic evidence of EFCC operatives besieging the prison. Tensions rose during the session as the petitioners’ lawyers sought to substantiate their case, while EFCC and Prison officials continued to deny the incident.

In response, the committee recommended that Emefiele’s lawyers proceed to court and file contempt charges if they believe the EFCC may violate the court order or if they strongly contend that the court’s order has been disregarded. The EFCC, asserting that they had no plans to abduct the former CBN Governor and claiming the incident never occurred, stated their position during the hearing.

Addressing the media, the petitioners’ lawyer maintained that the alleged attempt to forcefully abduct Emefiele from lawful custody did occur. He asserted that the organization would initiate contempt proceedings against the EFCC and DSS in case of a repeat of the reported illegality on November 22, 2023.

The representative of CESJET, Mr. Ahmed Tijani, criticized the EFCC and DSS for their alleged disregard for court orders, emphasizing their failure to respect multiple court-issued bail orders for Emefiele. Tijani stated, “We are not here to challenge the matter in court but to report the alleged attempt to forcefully remove Emefiele by EFCC from the Correctional Centre.
