During a recent episode of the “Interviewing The Interviewer” series, hosted by his wife, accomplished broadcaster Kikelomo Atanda-Owo, Abati reflected on the Nigerian media’s history of crusading for the people’s rights and advocating for their interests. He pointed to a pivotal moment in 1992 when the Babangida administration introduced broadcast medium deregulation, leading to a surge in the number of radio and television stations in the country. Abati highlighted the media’s consistent commitment, exemplified during the June 12 struggle.
Emphasizing the journalist’s duty, Abati referred to Section 22 of the 1999 constitution, stating that it guarantees the journalist’s role in calling those in power to order. He further noted that accountability is reinforced by Section 39 of the same constitution. Journalists are also guided by ethical standards outlined by the Nigerian Press Organisation, compelling them to be objective, fair, accurate, and act in the public interest.
Abati drew from historical examples, asserting that attempts to suppress or harm journalists have historically failed. He encouraged journalists to embrace courage and knowledge in fulfilling their roles, recognizing the significance of their profession in the broader context of societal accountability.
