Responding to the allegations on the evening of December 25, Umar-Farouq took to her X handle (formerly Twitter) and Instagram to dismiss the accusations as a baseless and malicious assault on her character.

Earlier reports had unveiled that an ongoing EFCC investigation disclosed the transfer of N37 billion from the Federal Government to 38 different bank accounts across five legacy commercial banks linked to Okwete.

Okwete’s arrest coincided with the scrutiny of the Humanitarian ministry and three ministers who served under the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. The contractor allegedly engaged in substantial transactions, transferring over N6 billion to Bureau De Change operators, withdrawing N540 million in cash, purchasing luxury cars worth N288,348,600, and acquiring upscale properties in Abuja and Enugu with N2,195,115,000.

Linked to 47 companies that secured federal government contracts totaling N27,423,824,339.86, Okwete reportedly owns 53 companies.

However, Umar-Farouq vehemently denied any connection with Okwete, stating, “There have been a number of reports linking me to a purported investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) into the activities of one James Okwete, someone completely unknown to me. James Okwete neither worked for, nor represented me in any way whatsoever. The linkages and associations to my person are spurious.”

While expressing reluctance to participate in any media trial, she confirmed her engagement with legal representatives to explore avenues for seeking redress against the unfounded allegations. Umar-Farouq emphasized her commitment to defending her actions, stewardship, and programs during her tenure as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
