The Secretary of the Transition Committee for Ukanafun local government Area, Udeme Idiong, officially confirmed the incident in a statement released on Tuesday, December 26. In the wake of the tragedy, the council chairman, Godwin Ekpe, sought the approval of the state government to withdraw all Ukanafun contingent participating in the ongoing Christmas Carol activity scheduled for December 28, 2023.
The statement further conveyed the declaration by Godwin Ekpe, the chairman of the transition committee, of a seven-day mourning period in honor of the departed. The mourning period commenced on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, and is set to conclude on Monday, January 1, 2024.
In collaboration with local government stakeholders and with the approval of the state government, Ekpe also sanctioned the withdrawal of Ukanafun’s contingent from the ongoing Christmas Unplugged activity scheduled for December 28, 2023. The statement concluded with a message of sympathy for the family of the deceased, accompanied by prayers for the repose of the departed souls. It is noteworthy that the late Obong Udo Ekpenyong, the husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Ekpenyong, passed away on January 19, 2021, succumbing to complications arising from Covid-19.
