Emphasizing the importance of major social media platforms having a presence in Nigeria, Nwoko stressed that it would contribute to economic growth, job creation, and effective dispute resolution, while also enhancing revenue generation for the nation. Despite Nigeria’s status as Africa’s most populous country with over 200 million people actively engaging with popular social media platforms, Nwoko pointed out that these companies have yet to establish offices in the country.

Highlighting the significant usage of platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok in Nigeria, Nwoko expressed concern about the absence of offices for these multinational corporations. He drew attention to the success stories of other multinational corporations, such as MTN Group, Shell, Chevron, Nestle, Total, and P&G, which have established operations in Nigeria, contributing to the nation’s economic growth.

Recalling the Federal Government’s 2022 mandate through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) for online platforms to register and open offices in Nigeria, Nwoko referenced the Twitter suspension in June 2021. The suspension was lifted after Twitter agreed to open a local office, highlighting the importance of swift resolution through local representation.

Nwoko expressed concern that the absence of social media offices in Nigeria leads to issues of limited local representation, slower responses to user complaints, and missed economic opportunities. He urged the ministries of Communication and Digital Economy, and Foreign Affairs to actively engage with social media platforms for the establishment of offices in Nigeria, citing potential economic benefits, job creation, and enhanced local engagement.

Furthermore, Nwoko called on NITDA to monitor compliance with regulations requiring online platforms to register and open offices in Nigeria, ensuring that social media platforms adhere to these requirements for the benefit of Nigerian users and the economy.
