The United Kingdom (UK) is considering the deportation of international students who fail to meet specified academic standards, according to a report by The Telegraph. Home Secretary James Cleverly has urged the UK Migration Advisory Committee to assess the graduate visa program as part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing net migration by 300,000 from its current record-high levels.

The report highlights that the UK issued two-year visas to more than 98,000 international students, marking a 74% year-on-year increase of 42,000. Concerns have been raised that the visa might be exploited as a means to enter low-skilled jobs or simply to stay in the country without seeking employment.

Professor Brian Bell, the committee’s chairman, emphasized the absence of specific grade requirements for students graduating under the current system. He stated, “That’s the question we want to review in the graduate route to think about whether that’s sensible or whether you should have a rule that says you have to achieve a certain grade or a certain kind of achievement in your course.”

The committee is also exploring the possibility of imposing additional restrictions, such as limiting foreign students to specific universities or designated courses. Certain types of employment or activities may also be subject to constraints. Currently, there are no restrictions on students’ activities during the two-year visa period.

Former home secretary Suella Braverman and former immigration minister Robert Jenrick have joined calls to either overhaul or eliminate the graduate visa, citing concerns about its potential to fuel immigration and be vulnerable to abuse. Jenrick previously expressed, “The graduate route is ripe for comprehensive reform. Too many universities have fallen into the migration, rather than education business, and are marketing low-grade, short courses as a backdoor to a life in the UK,” as reported by The Telegraph.
