he Federal Government has introduced the National Workplace Policy on HIV/AIDS, aiming to foster inclusivity, compassion, and collective responsibility in the country’s workplaces. In a statement released on Friday by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the policy, developed in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation, seeks to strengthen communities against the challenges presented by HIV/AIDS.

Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, unveiled the policy in Abuja as part of the activities commemorating the 2023 World Day Against HIV/AIDS. She characterized the policy launch as a significant milestone, underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to establishing workplaces that go beyond mere employment spaces. Onyejeocha emphasized the comprehensive nature of the framework, recognizing the pivotal role workplaces play in the lives of individuals and communities.
The minister highlighted the policy as a symbol of the Federal Government’s dedication to the well-being of the workforce and the nation’s prosperity. She stressed the need for a comprehensive and collaborative response to the HIV/AIDS challenge, calling on employers, employees, trade unions, and all stakeholders to embrace and diligently implement the policy.
Onyejeocha pointed out that the 2023 World Day Against AIDS theme, “Let Communities Lead,” encapsulates the essence of collective efforts and the crucial leadership and resilience of diverse communities in addressing HIV/AIDS challenges. She urged a paradigm shift in the approach to the response, recognizing communities as active leaders in the fight against the pandemic.
The minister emphasized that empowering communities strengthens the response foundation and charts a more resilient and sustainable path forward. She noted that communities are not passive recipients but active agents of change, capable of dispelling stigma, raising awareness, and cultivating an environment marked by understanding and support.
Emmanuel Igbinosun, Director Overseeing the Office of the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, highlighted the policy’s community-centric approach, recognizing workplaces’ unique role in individuals’ and communities’ lives. He described the policy as designed to promote awareness, inclusion, and provide a framework for the prevention, support, and management of HIV/AIDS within the workforce, marking a significant step in the collective commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive work environment.
