The jet was on its way from Moscow to St Petersburg when the incident occurred on Wednesday, August 23. Videos that surfaced post-crash depict the aircraft spiralling down with billowing smoke, while subsequent images show a fiery and tangled heap of wreckage.

Tass, Russia’s state news agency, citing emergency officials, reported that the plane had been carrying three pilots and seven passengers when it went down in the Tver region, a little over 60 miles north of Moscow. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Mr Prigozhin, known for his mercenary outfit’s operations alongside the regular Russian army in Ukraine, had recently attempted a coup against the Russian government in June. The upheaval was short-lived, and following a negotiated settlement with the Kremlin, Prigozhin had chosen to live in exile in neighboring Belarus.

The Wagner Group, under Prigozhin’s leadership, is alleged to extract diamonds, gold, oil, and gas from countries where it operates. Payments from questionable regimes and these dubious operations have reportedly amassed Prigozhin a colossal fortune, with some valuations suggesting his worth could be as much as £2 billion.

Yevgeny Prigozhin had also come under the scrutiny of U.S. prosecutors in 2018 when he was charged for presumably funding the Internet Research Agency. This agency, described by the U.S. as a Russian “troll farm”, was accused of launching digital campaigns to heighten political and social tensions within the U.S.
