BREAKING: Opposition Coalition Postpones Major Summit, Announces New Date!

The G100, a coalition of opposition politicians, has postponed its proposed Summit of Opposition Political Parties, moving the event from August 18 to Monday, August 31, 2026.

The group said the decision followed consultations with the six participating political parties and members of the Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives.

The development was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of the G100.

According to the coalition, the postponement became necessary because the National Peace Summit, scheduled for August 18, is expected to draw the participation of leaders and key stakeholders from the political parties involved in the G100 discussions.

The group explained that consultations with the parties and members of the Minority Caucus produced a broad agreement that its summit would be more productive if held after the National Peace Summit.

It added that the new date would allow opposition parties additional time for internal consultations, coordination and preparations ahead of the gathering.

The G100 disclosed that it had recently engaged extensively with the leadership and major stakeholders of the six participating opposition parties, as well as members of the Minority Caucus.

It described the discussions as “frank, substantive and encouraging,” noting that the participating parties had demonstrated serious commitment to the ongoing conversations.

The coalition said there was growing recognition among the parties that Nigeria had reached an important moment for democracy and that opposition groups needed to engage more deliberately and strategically.

It stated that despite differences among the various parties, the consultations had revealed a willingness to listen, consider different options and identify areas where cooperation could be achieved.

The G100 expressed optimism that the August 31 summit would produce meaningful outcomes, given the quality of discussions held so far.

The coalition said it would use the additional time before the summit to continue consultations with the participating parties and other stakeholders.

It also plans to further develop the proposals and frameworks that will be presented for discussion at the summit.

The G100 added that details regarding the programme and venue for the August 31 event would be made public in due course.
