Abdulillahi Yakassai, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North-West), made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday.
Yakassai explained that combating insurgency has become increasingly difficult as insurgents adopt guerrilla tactics.
He said, “While the security situation has improved in some parts of the country, new tactics are emerging, like those seen in Kwara State, which is very unfortunate. Even the president is having sleepless nights, holding weekly security council meetings at the Presidential Villa to address these challenges.
“This is a complex issue. We cannot simply blame this government, because some of these attacks are orchestrated by elements seeking to tarnish the administration’s image. It’s not always a coordinated security threat; there are forces working against the government.”
Yakassai also highlighted areas where security has improved significantly. “Places like the Abuja-Kaduna corridor, which previously faced massive insecurity, have seen substantial reductions. Zamfara State has also seen a major decline in incidents. However, insurgents have shifted their tactics to guerrilla-style attacks in states like Niger and Kwara. Immediately after the appointment of the Inspector-General of Police, the president’s first action was to visit Kwara, including Kaiama, to assess the situation,” he added.
He concluded by assuring that the government is actively working to end the menace and restore stability across affected regions.
