The impeachment process, which began last week, stems from allegations of gross misconduct. The notice, reportedly signed by 26 lawmakers, was read aloud by the Assembly Leader, Major Jack.

On Friday, the Assembly passed a motion directing the Chief Judge to set up a panel to investigate the allegations, which include budgetary impropriety, failure to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill, unauthorized expenditure of public funds, and withholding statutory allocations for the legislature, among other infractions.

Court Issues Interim Restraining Order

Meanwhile, a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt issued an interim restraining order barring the Chief Judge from receiving or acting on any impeachment notice against Fubara and Odu. The order, granted by Justice Florence Fiberesima, followed separate suits filed by the governor and his deputy (OYHC/7/CS/2026 and OYHC/6/CS/2026).

Justice Fiberesima prohibited the Chief Judge from receiving, forwarding, considering, or acting on any request, resolution, or articles of impeachment submitted by the Assembly.

Assembly Confirms Submission

Despite the court order, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions, and Complaints, Enemi George, stated that the impeachment letters and supporting documents had already been delivered and acknowledged by the Chief Judge.

George said, “It is important to inform the people of Rivers State that the Speaker has fully complied with the Constitution. All relevant documents, including the Notices of Allegations of Gross Misconduct, were attached and acknowledged.”

He emphasized that the Assembly’s actions are fully anchored in Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which governs the impeachment of a governor. George urged residents to remain calm and not be influenced by efforts to undermine the democratic process.

“All subsequent steps in the impeachment process are clearly outlined under the Constitution. The people of Rivers State should not be misled by those seeking to truncate democracy,” he added, thanking residents for their support and prayers and assuring them that the Assembly is acting within legal bounds.
