BREAKING: Senate Approves Landmark Student Loan Legislation

Today, the Senate has approved the Student Loan, Access to Higher Education, Act 2024, marking a significant milestone in educational reform.

The decision came after thorough consideration of the report presented by Senator Muntari Dandutse, chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND.

President Bola Tinubu had forwarded the bill to the National Assembly last week, initiating the legislative process.

In a remarkable move, the Senate expedited the bill’s progress by waiving certain procedural rules and referring it to the Committee of the Whole for swift examination.

Following extensive deliberations, Senate President Godswill Akpabio directed further scrutiny by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, with a mandate to report back within one week.

The bill aims to broaden access to higher education for financially disadvantaged Nigerians by establishing the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which will offer interest-free loans to support educational endeavors across the nation.

This development underscores the Senate’s commitment to enhancing educational opportunities and fostering national development.
