Lives At Stake’: FCT Doctors Demand Action From Wike As Shutdown Deadline Nears!
The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in the Federal Capital Territory has issued a 14-day ultimatum, warning of an impending “deadliest shutdown” of hospitals if their outstanding demands are not addressed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Dr. George Ebong, President of the association, made the declaration during a press conference held on Monday at Wuse District Hospital, Abuja.
Ebong urged the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to prioritize the welfare of doctors, who he described as being on the brink of collapse due to economic challenges. While commending Wike for his infrastructural strides in Abuja, he called for equal attention to be given to human capital development.
He said, “We acknowledge the minister’s commendable infrastructural achievements in the FCT. However, we must emphasize that doctors are an ‘abandoned project.’ While addressing physical infrastructure, we urge the minister to resolve issues affecting human development with the same urgency.”
The association outlined several demands, including:
- Clearing six months of salary arrears owed to members employed in 2023.
- Immediate payment of the 2024 Medical Residency Training Fund.
- Reducing the bonding policy from six years to two years.
- Enforcing the implementation of skipping allowances and issuing skipping letters to members employed in 2023.
- Paying accoutrements allowances for 2024 and outstanding 13 months of hazard allowance arrears.
- Accelerating the conversion of ARD FCTA Post 2 members to consultants.
- Fast-tracking the employment of healthcare workers to address manpower shortages in FCT hospitals.
“This injustice is unprecedented in the FCT. If unresolved, it will lead to a collapse of the nation’s healthcare sector,” Ebong warned.
He reminded the minister of a prior 21-day ultimatum issued during the association’s Annual General Meeting, noting that only 14 days remain to avert the looming crisis.
“We do not wish for the deadliest shutdown that could result in loss of lives. It is crucial for the minister to act swiftly and decisively to meet our demands,” Ebong concluded.
