This announcement was made on Thursday by Senator Ben Obi, Chairman of the national burial committee, during a press conference in Abuja. He was joined by Ohanaeze Ndigbo Secretary General Amb. Okey Emuchay and other committee members, including Senator Osita Izunaso and Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.). The committee outlined a series of events leading up to the burial.
“Our message today is to convey the burial dates for the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo,” Obi stated. Key events include:
– **Lagos Day of Tributes**: Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at Eko Hotels and Convention Centre.
– **Abuja Day of Tributes**: Friday, October 18, 2024, at the National Ecumenical Centre.
– **Enugu Day of Tributes**: Saturday, October 26, 2024, starting at the Ohanaeze headquarters, 7 Parkland GRA Enugu, with the main event at Okpara Square.
– **Owerri Service of Songs**: Tuesday, October 29, 2024.
– **Commendation Service**: November 1 in Owerri, followed by the burial on the same day.
Senator Obi also mentioned that the committee plans to visit President Bola Tinubu to inform him about Iwuanyanwu’s passing and burial arrangements. “We will be visiting President Tinubu to formally communicate details of this transition, and I am sure the President is aware of Chief Iwuanyanwu’s contributions,” he said.
During the event, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Secretary reflected on Iwuanyanwu’s legacy, stating he died fulfilled, having always strived to make a positive impact. “Chief Iwuanyanwu and I visited Kanu in jail, which was likely his last official assignment. He consistently advocated for Kanu’s release and spoke out on issues of equity, fairness, and justice, collaborating with groups like PANDEF, the Middle Belt Forum, and Afenifere to seek parity among geopolitical zones.”
Obi assured that Ohanaeze will continue to champion the causes that were close to Iwuanyanwu’s heart, vowing to uphold his legacy.
