Dr. Kabir Hassan, the Chairman of the Northeast Youth Progressive Union, made this appeal during a press conference held in Yola, the capital of Adamawa State. He emphasized the need for Northern leaders to accelerate the development of the region.
Hassan underscored that prioritizing education in their annual budgets could effectively address issues of insecurity and poverty in the region.
He urged them to draw inspiration from the development achievements of Kano State and the exemplary leadership of certain governors from other states.
He mentioned, “Governor Yusuf of Kano State has funded the education, including tuition, meals, and accommodation, of 1,001 postgraduate students in India.
He has also covered the NECO fees for 57,000 students and tuition for 7,000 students at Bayero University. Additionally, tertiary institution students in Kano now receive a 50 percent discount on their fees.”
Hassan stressed that the Northern region has faced significant challenges, including insurgency and poverty, and he called on the governors to view education as a key tool in the region’s efforts to restore its former glory.
