Canada’s Immigration Minister, Lena Metlege Diab, made the announcement in Ottawa on Wednesday, highlighting the country’s strategy to bring in top global talent.

“Today, we are introducing new categories designed to meet and support Canada’s evolving needs and reflect our government’s determination to attract the best talent to Canada,” Diab stated.

According to details on Canada’s official immigration platform, the new 2026 Express Entry categories will prioritize professionals with prior Canadian work experience. This includes medical doctors, researchers, and senior managers who have previously worked in the country.

The categories also target transport workers and skilled military personnel with job offers from the Canadian Armed Forces. The initiative aims to strengthen critical sectors of the Canadian economy while filling workforce gaps.

This move underscores Canada’s ongoing efforts to attract qualified professionals globally, including Nigerians, as part of its strategy to drive economic growth and innovation through immigration.

In related news, Tom Homan, former border enforcement chief under President Donald Trump, announced that the controversial immigration enforcement surge in Minnesota will conclude.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, Homan said Trump approved his request to end the operation. He will remain in Minnesota briefly to oversee the withdrawal and ensure a smooth process.

Homan described Operation Metro Surge as a major success, claiming it led to the detention of many undocumented immigrants convicted of violent crimes who are now facing deportation. However, the operation sparked nationwide protests after two American citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, were killed by immigration officers.

Following the announcement, top Minnesota and federal officials testified at a Capitol Hill hearing regarding Trump’s immigration policies.

Homan stated that Minnesota officials have significantly reduced the number of enforcement targets, calling the operation “a great success.” Over 4,000 undocumented immigrants were reportedly arrested during the surge, including individuals convicted of rape and other serious sexual offenses.

He emphasized that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has always operated in Minnesota and will continue to do so after the surge ends. Homan credited the operation’s achievements to unprecedented collaboration between federal agents and local law enforcement. Local authorities increased their response to protesters, whom Homan described as public safety threats, while local jails became more cooperative in notifying ICE about individuals under the agency’s watch.
