According to Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the Imo Police, the gun duel resulted in injuries to two local vigilantes, who were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The attackers, faced with strong resistance, were forced to flee into the adjoining bushes with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.
Tragically, one of the attackers died while receiving medical attention, while the other is reported to be in stable condition.
IPOB, on the other hand, asserts that the insecurity plaguing the Southeast Region is a result of Nigeria’s state-sponsored blackmail against Ndigbo, specifically targeting IPOB’s peaceful movement for Biafra referendum.
They maintain that they have consistently condemned and dissociated themselves from the actions of the so-called “unknown gunmen” and argue that the Nigerian Security Agencies are well aware of the individuals behind these masked attacks.
The group points to incidents like the prison break at Owerri Correctional facility on April 5, 2021, and covert operations at Suleja Abuja Prison on July 5, 2020, as evidence of the involvement of government agents in such attacks.
They question how non-state actors could carry out prolonged jailbreaks without facing any resistance from security operatives if they were not backed by the government.
