Commander Blames Poor Network For Delayed Response In Kaduna And Ekiti Abductions....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Commander of the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre, Hammed Abodunrin, attributed the delayed security response during the Kaduna and Ekiti schoolchildren abductions to poor network connectivity. Abodunrin revealed this during an interview with our correspondent, underscoring the challenges faced in promptly addressing such crises.
The Safe School Response initiative, initiated by the Federal Government in light of escalating attacks on educational institutions by bandits, aims to bolster safety and security measures in schools and their surrounding communities. Established on February 23, 2023, the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre is tasked with orchestrating coordinated responses to violence in educational settings.
Recent incidents, including the abduction of six pupils, two teachers, and a driver from Apostolic Faith Church Primary and Secondary School in Emure on January 30, 2024, and the kidnapping of 287 pupils from a school in Kuriga, Kaduna State, on March 6, highlight the urgent need for effective response mechanisms.
Reflecting on the lessons learned from these abductions, Abodunrin emphasized the government’s efforts to develop technologies capable of transmitting information to the Safe School team even in the absence of reliable telecommunication networks, ensuring swift responses to emergencies.
He remarked, “For instance, we discovered that information was delayed in Kaduna because there was no network. The same scenario played out in Ekiti. We are working on technology that can transmit information even without networks from service providers.”
Abodunrin also outlined plans to train staff members from various schools and community members in emergency management, aiming to enhance their capacity as first responders. Additionally, he stressed the importance of community engagement and public security education in reducing vulnerabilities and addressing diverse threats such as rape and cultism in schools.
Addressing the complexity of these challenges, Abodunrin underscored the need for deliberate, decisive, and procedural approaches to problem-solving, ensuring that solutions do not inadvertently exacerbate existing issues.
Furthermore, he highlighted the role of the Safe School Response team in addressing various threats beyond abductions, indicating a comprehensive approach to safeguarding educational environments.
In conclusion, Abodunrin reiterated the commitment of the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Centre to enhancing safety and security measures in schools, underscoring the imperative of collaborative efforts and proactive strategies in mitigating risks and protecting students and staff.
