Constituency Project: Shehu Sani Explains Senate’s Sharing Formula

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has shed light on the discrepancies surrounding the allocation of funds for Senate constituency projects.

Amidst the uproar over the alleged inflation of the 2024 budget, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele from Ekiti Central confirmed that Senators were allocated N500 million each for their respective constituency projects.

However, members of the Labour Party (LP) claimed to have received only N250 million for similar projects. Meanwhile, Senator Ned Nwoko of Delta North revealed in a recent interview that he secured a whopping N1 billion from the budget for his constituency projects.

In an exclusive interview with Naija News, Shehu Sani clarified that Senators do not receive uniform amounts for constituency projects. He explained that there’s a hierarchical structure in the Senate, and the allocation of funds varies based on several factors, including the number of Senators from a particular zone.

Sani elaborated, “There are six geopolitical zones, and the funds are distributed equally among them, accounting for the number of Senators within each zone. Consequently, Senators from zones with fewer representatives tend to receive more funds. In essence, not all Senators are treated equally in terms of project allocation.”

He further noted, “For instance, Senators hailing from the Northwest, which comprises approximately seven states, have more representatives compared to those from the Southeast, which consists of five states. Therefore, Senators from the Southeast are likely to receive higher allocations. However, there are additional considerations such as the hierarchical structure within the Senate. Principal officers and committee chairmen typically receive larger allocations compared to regular Senators.”

Sani’s insights shed light on the nuanced distribution system within the Senate, revealing that factors such as regional representation and hierarchical positions influence the allocation of funds for constituency projects.
