Consumers Express Concerns Over Electricity Tariff Hike: Impact And Solutions Explored....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The recent decision by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to increase electricity tariffs has raised significant concerns among various stakeholders, leading to widespread criticism and predictions of negative repercussions. The tariff hike, affecting approximately 1,974,385 consumers, is aimed at reducing the substantial subsidy burden on electricity, estimated at N2.9 trillion in the 2024 fiscal year.
NERC’s move was necessitated by financial constraints stemming from the federal government’s inability to meet obligations to the Nigeria Electricity Market, leading to a buildup of debts totaling N3.5 trillion to power generation companies and gas suppliers. The tariff adjustment, particularly targeting Band A customers, entails a substantial increase from N68 per kilowatt-hour to N225/kWh, affecting those receiving an average daily supply of electricity for 20 hours or more.
Despite NERC’s assertion that subsidy payments across bands have become unsustainable, stakeholders remain skeptical about the effectiveness of the tariff hike in addressing fundamental energy challenges. Economists warn of exacerbating poverty rates and straining household budgets, as utility bills are expected to soar, impacting consumers’ disposable income and purchasing power.
Trade unions, such as the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), denounce the tariff hike as unacceptable, deeming it a recipe for social unrest. They argue that the increase disproportionately burdens the poor and fails to address the fundamental issue of inadequate electricity supply, especially as promised improvements have not materialized.
Industry experts emphasize the need for comprehensive solutions to address systemic issues in the electricity value chain, including funding and liquidity crises, technical and commercial losses, and the lack of widespread metering. They caution that while tariff adjustments may be necessary, they must be accompanied by measures to improve efficiency and service delivery.
Critics, including political parties like the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), condemn the tariff hike as insensitive and detrimental to citizens already grappling with economic hardships. They call on the government to reconsider its decision and prioritize the welfare of the populace.
In light of mounting discontent and economic uncertainties, the Nigerian government faces increasing pressure to reassess its energy policies and implement sustainable solutions that ensure affordable and reliable electricity supply for all citizens.
