The decision of Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, to embark on the Hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia, accompanied by his deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, and the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkin-Daji, has triggered widespread discontent among the state’s residents.
Reports indicate that the governor and his deputy left the state sometime between Sunday and Monday to partake in the annual pilgrimage. Many residents view this move as a dereliction of duty, accusing the governor of neglecting his responsibilities and leaving them vulnerable amidst the state’s profound security challenges.
Opposition parties in the region have voiced their discontent, highlighting the detrimental impact of the absence of key government officials, including the governor, deputy governor, Speaker, and numerous members of the State Executive Council. This absence, they argue, has effectively paralyzed government operations.
Alhaji Umar Danladi Abdulhamid of the Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) expressed dismay at the governor’s actions, particularly given the prevailing security issues confronting the state. He emphasized the need for governance that prioritizes the welfare and concerns of citizens, especially during such challenging times.
